About Yale University
Yale University is a private non-profit school founded in 1701. Its main campus is located on 310 acres in New Haven, CT, and features 260 buildings designed by distinguished architects throughout Yale's more than 300-year history. It also has a nearby West Campus, which is home to some of the university's research facilities.
Academics
Yale College is the only undergraduate school at Yale University. It offers over 2,000 liberal arts and science courses through 65 departments and programs. The college's most popular undergraduate majors for the 2010-2011 academic year were political science, psychology, history, biology, and economics.
Other undergraduate programs, including those in art and architecture, are available through some of the university's 13 professional schools. Yale offers master's and doctoral programs in such areas as the arts and sciences, medicine, and nursing. Additionally, working professionals can take advantage of the Yale World Fellows Program, which seeks to advance members' critical-thinking and leadership skills.
Admissions
Applications for Yale College are due by December 31. The early action application deadline is November 1. Prospective students need to submit 2 letters of recommendation from teachers and 1 from a guidance counselor. High school transcripts and standardized test scores are also required. In the Fall of 2010, 88% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores, while 32% submitted ACT scores.
Admission to Yale is competitive. Of the more than 25,000 undergraduate applicants in 2010, only 8% were admitted, and 66% of those admitted actually enrolled. Fall 2011 undergraduates were comprised of 47% white, 15% Asian, 10% Hispanic/Latino, and 6% Black or African American students.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Estimated undergraduate expenses for the 2011-2012 academic year included $40,500 for tuition and fees, $3,150 for books and supplies, and $12,200 for on-campus room and board. Students who demonstrate financial need can have the costs of their education covered through a combination of university scholarships and around 10 hours of work-study aid per week.
The Yale Scholarship covers a large part of student expenses. For the 2011-2012 academic year, more than half of undergraduate students received this form of financial aid, earning an average award of around $38,000. Additionally, more than 10% of students had the entire cost of their education financed by the university.
