Discover Outdoors

Discover Outdoors was established in 2004. This company offers education-based experiences to clients who want to develop their minds and bodies. These experiences help participants acquire new skills and increase their levels of awareness and health, as well as test their limits. The company offers team-building experiences for corporations, youth programs, outdoor fitness events, international trips and excursions lasting from one day to several days. Instructors have extensive wilderness experience and hold professional designations, such as licensed trail guide, wilderness emergency medical technician and certified first responder for the wilderness.

Wilderness First Responder Certification

This 80-hour medical course looks at medicolegal issues, infectious diseases, traumatic situations, medical emergencies and blood-borne pathogens. Participants are introduced to the Patient Assessment System, which helps them figure out what is wrong with a patient who has taken ill in the backcountry. Other topics include treating heat injuries and hypothermia. Participants learn through labs and simulations and spend most of the course outside (depends on the weather). Participants hone their rescue and leadership skills. There are no prerequisites, and the course is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age.

Once a participant earns the wilderness first responder certification, it is good for three years. Participants also earn the American Heart Association Adult and Child CPR card. To pass the course, participants must take part in all activities related to the course. At the end of the course, participants must pass practical and written exams.

Participants in the class must wear clothing suitable for the weather. They are also required to bring a pack loaded with rope, two bottles of water, a sleeping pad, a notebook and pen, first aid kit and extra layers of clothing. Other suggested items include a driver's license (or ID), rain gear, warm hat, watch, pocket knife, trekking poles, structural aluminum malleable (SAM) splint, sunscreen and sunglasses.
