Orange Coast College

Founded in 1947, Orange Coast College is one of the largest community colleges in the nation in terms of enrollment. Its medical sonography studies are offered through its allied health programs, which include medical assisting, radiologic technology, dental assisting and respiratory care.

Associate in Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Students of this program take 69 credits of program major courses and 15 credits of general education classes. Those seeking to enter this program must have already taken courses in anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, introductory sonography and radiologic physics. Courses in this 2-year program include patient care, scanning practices and pathophysiology in addition to abdominal, vascular, OB/GYN and sectional anatomy procedures. A 5-part clinical experience is part of the curriculum.

Loma Linda University

Established in 1905, Loma Linda University today offers more than 100 programs. The School of Allied Health Professions provides studies in diagnostic medical sonography and cardiac and vascular imaging.

Cardiac and Vascular Imaging Certificate

This 12-month program begins in the autumn and combines classroom studies with clinical experiences. Classes are taken in vascular anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular pharmacology, patient assessment and cardiac electrophysiology.

Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Students must earn a total of 153 credits in this 27-month program to meet all requirements for graduation. Completion of the program readies one to take national registered vascular technology (RVT) and registered diagnostic medical sonography (RDMS) exams. Courses cover ultrasound instrumentation, radiologic management and neurosonography. A medical sonography clinical affiliation is taken in eight of the program's nine quarters.
