Essential Information
Out of Utah's 21 public and private not-for-profit schools, only one has a diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) program. Students may earn a bachelor's degree in DMS. Hands-on training and practicum requirements are included in such programs, though individuals interested in earning certification will additionally need to have job experience in the field prior to taking the exam.
Weber State University
Ogden-based Weber State University has a DMS bachelor's degree program that can be finished with 120 credit hours. Applicants to the program must already be a registered radiologic technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The program also accepts students who work in school-approved equivalent positions.
Students can follow the medica or cardiac DMS track. The medical track includes gynecologic, obstetric, superficial structure and abdominal sonography courses. Cardiac track courses cover protocols and techniques for cardiac scanning. Regardless of the DMS track, students encounter courses in sectional anatomy, sonographic principles and instrumentation, quality assurance, patient care, imaging pathophysiology, medical law and medical ethics. The DMS program also requires students to complete clinical work, laboratory components and a thesis.
Career Requirements
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that DMS workers may have a better chance at finding a job after earning a professional certification. The State of Utah doesn't currently require DMS workers to be licensed.
