Both 2-year colleges and 4-year universities offer engineering technology career training. Engineering technology programs are typically found at the undergraduate level and often focus on one specific area of engineering, such as electronics engineering technology, telecommunications engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology or chemical engineering technology. Some programs have further specializations, and many engineering technology programs include laboratory courses. Internships and research opportunities are sometimes available too.
Texas A&M University
The Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University, located in College Station, Texas, is one of the top ten engineering schools in the country. The school offers Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering Technology programs with options in manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology, and electronics engineering technology.
The electronics engineering technology program teaches students to work with a variety of electronic equipment, including equipment used in medical imaging, semiconductor manufacturing, communications and power testing. The manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology program teaches students about materials and manufacturing processes, manufacturing information systems, process technologies and automation, and it includes research opportunities.
Houston Community College
Located in Houston, Texas, Houston Community College (HCC) offers a number of 2-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs that prepare students for careers as engineering technicians in a variety of industries. Students in the computer and electronic engineering technology program choose an area of specialization, including biomedical electronics, computer engineering technology, Cisco router technology, computer networking or wireless telecommunications. The drafting and design engineering technology program prepares students for careers in architecture, construction, manufacturing and engineering, while the instrumentation and controls engineering technology program teaches students to repair, maintain, install and safely operate process control systems and instruments.
