School Overviews

Travel and tourism management programs can be commonly found at the undergraduate and graduate degree levels at many top schools. Schools that off these programs include George Washington University, Johnson and Wales University, New York University, and Brigham Young University. Each of the four universities discussed here offers tourism administration or management degree programs. Depending on the program, students may be able to complete all or some of their coursework online, pursue a unique concentration in sports or sustainable tourism, or prepare for a career as a hotel or hospitality manager. All four schools are highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report.

George Washington University

Washington D.C.'s George Washington University is a four-year, private school that U.S. News and World Report designated the 56th-best national university in 2016, as well as the 8th school for international business in 2015. The institution has offered experiential learning opportunities to its students in such places as Beijing, Mumbai, and Stockholm. Students in the School of Business can pursue a Master of Tourism Administration, available on campus or online, with concentrations in sustainable tourism, sport management, or hospitality management. They can also further specialize in ecotourism or heritage tourism. George Washington University also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business Administration with a concentration in tourism management. An accelerated Master of Tourism Administration is offered online with minimal residency requirements.

Johnson and Wales University

Johnson and Wales University is a four-year, private school in Providence, Rhode Island, that U.S. News and World Report ranked 67th among best regional universities in the North for 2017. Through the university's Hospitality College, students can earn a travel-tourism and hospitality management bachelor's degree or an international hotel and tourism management bachelor's degree. Areas of concentration include adventure, sport and nature-based tourism, casino and gaming operations, or sales and marketing management. Students can also pursue concentrated coursework in sports management, golf management, and entrepreneurship. Tourism and hospitality management students have a number of study abroad opportunities available to them as well. In addition to Providence, the school has campuses in North Miami, Denver, and Charlotte.

New York University

New York University (NYU) in New York City is a four-year private school that U.S. News and World Report ranked 36th on its list of best national universities in 2016. Through NYU's Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Tourism Management with an optional concentration in tourism development. Undergraduates learn about the accounting, marketing, and sales methods used in the tourism industry, and they must complete 600 hours of fieldwork. They also study destinations and cultures, entrepreneurship, and sports tourism. Graduate candidates can pursue a Master of Science in Tourism Management program, which includes topics in tourism policy analysis, sustainable tourism, and tourism planning.

Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University - Hawaii was ranked #14 among schools in the West by U.S. News and World Report for 2017. The school in Laie, Hawaii, offers a bachelor's program in hospitality and tourism management. Students can choose a hospitality management track or tourism management track. In addition, students are required to complete an internship or practicum. The school's close relationship with the Polynesian Cultural Center provides students with opportunities to study and work.
