The Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, located on the Tempe campus, features teaching programs for preschool through the 12th grade, in addition to graduate and professional programs for those wanting advanced training or to fulfill continuing education requirements. Four components are emphasized in all programs: superior education courses, current content, signature classes and practical teaching experience. Students can choose from about 20 graduate certificate, master's degree and doctoral degree programs. The following are just a few examples of this wide range of options:
The Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder is an online program that requires at least a bachelor's degree. The four classes focus on teaching cutting edge methods for working with ASD students, while a practicum provides the chance to use skills in a real setting.
The Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design and Performance Improvement program aims to improve student learning and performance through innovative instruction. The program is open to graduates with a bachelor's degree in any subject. The five required courses include an overview of current topics in educational technology, distance teaching and learning, computer-based teaching, curriculum design and human performance technology.
The Master of Physical Education is designed for certified physical education teachers who want advanced training. The program is also open to teachers of other subjects who want to teach physical education. The curriculum focuses on training in current teaching methods for kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as in the administrative aspects of physical and sports education.
The Master of Education in Educational Leadership is for educators who want to become principals or school district directors at the preschool through 12th grade level. The challenging coursework includes an internship in which students apply the theories they've learned to the school where they are employed. Since it's designed to meet Arizona-approved requirements for principal certification, teachers from other states will want to contact their state Departments of Education for information on reciprocity.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Education Policy and Evaluation trains participants to research, analyze and recommend improvements to national education policies. In addition to courses, practical experience with decision-making groups at all educational levels is featured. Candidates must be prepared to write and publish an original article in a scholarly journal.
The Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation program is intended for experienced teachers and administrators who want to learn and apply new innovations in education. Topics studied include systems change and leadership, methods of inquiry, and innovations in learning and teaching. Students must complete a dissertation.
