In Maryland, teaching programs are available at the bachelor's, post-baccalaureate and graduate levels in a variety of specializations that can include elementary education, mathematics education and more. These programs can lead to initial teaching certification or additional subject or grade-level endorsements. All Maryland public schools require certification for teachers.

University of Maryland - College Park

Located in College Park between the metropolitan communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore, this school is Maryland's first established public university. U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Maryland as the 58th best university in the nation for 2020. The College of Education offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in elementary, secondary and special education designed to meet state teaching certification standards.

Bachelor's degree students complete coursework in a subject area of interest. Additional coursework is geared toward education students of a specific age range, such as pre-K through grade 3. Graduate students complete practical training in addition to classroom learning.

Towson University

Towson University is Maryland's second largest university. The Towson campus is eight miles north of Baltimore in a 328-acre suburban setting. Towson University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is a founding member of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. The teaching programs prepare students for state certification. Graduation requirements include classroom learning and fieldwork. In addition to several bachelor's degree programs, this school offers a specialized certification program for aspiring teachers who already hold a bachelor's degree, as well as a master's degree program intended for working teachers seeking an expansion of skills and career advancement.
