Schools in Texas Offering Master's Programs in Structural Engineering
University of Texas, Austin
UT Austin is home to a Master of Science in Engineering program with an emphasis in structural engineering. Three different tracks are available depending on your career aspirations. You could choose to write a thesis, prepare a report based on your graduate school experience, or focus entirely on coursework. You don't need to declare your choice when you first enroll, but you'll need to have a plan in place by the time your second semester has begun. UT Austin's graduate school requires you to maintain a GPA of 3.0 throughout your time in the program.
Texas A&M University
At Texas A&M, you can choose two different degree options to study structural engineering. The subject is available as a specialty within the Master of Science and Master of Engineering programs. Students in the M.S. program are able to choose from a thesis or non-thesis track. For the M.E. degree, a higher focus is placed on conducting independent research and gaining an expert understanding of engineering concepts. Both degrees could lead to doctoral programs with the right amount of preparation.
University of Texas, Arlington
The Arlington branch of the University of Texas offers a Master of Science as well as a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering. You'll choose an area to perform research and specialize in, and structures and applied mechanics is one of the options available in both programs. Once you find your faculty advisor, you can sit down with him or her and map out your plan of study for the 30-credit degree. If you choose the structural engineering option, you can take courses to study advanced steel and concrete design as well as materials mechanics. A thesis is required as part of the M.S. program.
University of Texas, San Antonio
Another UT campus offers two master's degree programs in civil engineering where you can choose structures as your specialization. UTSA is home to a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Civil Engineering. In the M.S. program, you can choose from a 34-credit non-thesis option or a thesis option with 30 credits. If you are accepted into the M.C.E. program, you will finish your plan of study by giving a technical seminar. Both degrees ensure that you have advanced technical training in structures by the time you exit graduate school.
Texas Tech University
Texas Tech offers a Master of Science in Civil Engineering. Much like other programs in the state, you can choose to specialize in the area of structural engineering once you gain admission. You could write a thesis and complete the program with 30 credits, six of which will come from independent research. If you choose to waive the thesis option, you could pursue the master's report option instead or complete the degree with all coursework.
Admissions Requirements for Structural Engineering Master's Degrees in Texas
You will need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering (or a closely-related field) from an accredited university before applying to a master's program in the same subject. When creating your statement of purpose, be sure to carefully explain why you want to study this area and how your career plans intersect with your research goals. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly from your previous instructors to the school where you are applying. GRE scores are required, but you won't need to take any subject exams after finishing the general exam.
