Requirements that Educators Must Meet

Before an educator is able to renew their certification, they must have completed three primary tasks. The first is completing at least one clock hour of suicide awareness and prevention training, while the second is adhering to the South Dakota Code of Professional Ethics for Teachers. The final requirement that educators seeking renewal must meet is earning six continuing education credits. These must be verified either through an official transcript from an accredited university and/or a contact hours certificate.

South Dakota Code of Professional Ethics

The South Dakota Code of Professional Ethics for Teachers is a basic fifteen-part code that outlines the educators ethical responsibilities to not only their students, but to their employers, colleagues, and themselves. The educator will be expected to put the welfare of students at the front of their minds when acting and making decisions. They are also required to display moral standards by following and enforcing rules and laws on a local, state, and federal level. This includes respecting the civil rights of all whom they encounter while performing the duties that come along with their positions. They are expected to act with integrity and honesty, as well as to maintain relationships without spite, intimidation, and disparagement. These are just the basic ethics; more can be viewed on the South Dakota Department of Education's website.

Continuing Education Credits

The process of completing six continuing education credits can be done either by taking classes at an accredited university or accumulating continuing education contact hours. The official transcript credits must contain information on the courses taken such as course titles, course numbers, credits, and grades. All courses must be education-related, and the educator must have attained a C or higher grade.

Continuing education contact hours must also be education-related and require documentation relaying the course title, individual/agency awarding contact hours, educator's name, contact hours awarded, and date and location of training. Instead of completing the education credits, those renewing a professional teaching certificate are also required to participate as a mentee or mentor in such a program from two of the five preceding years. They also have the option of completing a national board certification, or recertification in those same preceding five years.

How to Renew Your South Dakota Certification

The South Dakota Department of Education requires that educators complete the educator certificate renewal online via their Educator Certificate Online Application System. The applicant must log in to, or create, an account on this system in order to start the application. From here, the applicant must select Educator Certification - Renewal Application; this will take them to the application that must be completed in order to renew a certificate.

In order for the application to be processed and the renewal approved, the educator must provide official transcripts through mail. They will have to submit contact hour certificates either electronically on the application, by email, or through the mail. The educator can also request the accredited university electronically submit their transcripts to the South Dakota Department of Education.
