South Carolina Teacher Certification Programs

Oct 20, 2021

Essential Information

South Carolina has many schools that offer teaching degree programs that prepare graduates for the certification process, which includes testing and licensing. Both bachelor's and master's degree programs in education are available. These include broad programs in early childhood education, elementary education, middle level education and secondary education, as well as specialized programs in areas such as physical education, performing arts and special education. Upon completion of an approved program, including all coursework and student teaching requirements, students are eligible to apply for certification by the South Carolina Department of Education.

College of Charleston

Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs for those with a desire to be a certified educator. These include programs in early childhood education, physical education, special education, elementary education and performing arts.

The bachelor's degree program in early childhood education provides a well-rounded foundation in general education studies, along with courses specific to teachers of young children. The physical education bachelor's program is concentrated for those interested in teaching physical education to children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students in the special education bachelor's program are prepared for certification in at least two of the three main areas of special education.

Designed for individuals who have an undergraduate degree in something other than education, the master's degree program in elementary education prepares students for certification in teaching at the elementary school level. There's also a performing arts teaching master's degree program, which is offered with concentrations in choral music, theatre and dance. The performing arts program is designed for someone without an undergraduate degree or background in education.

University of South Carolina - Columbia

The University of South Carolina - Columbia offers many graduate and undergraduate programs for people interested in becoming a certified teacher. Program offerings include those in early childhood education, elementary education, middle level education and secondary education.

Students who complete the bachelor's program in early childhood education are eligible for teacher certification for pre-kindergarten through third grade, while those who complete the elementary education bachelor's program are eligible for certification to teach second through sixth grade. The middle level education bachelor's program is available as a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, and it prepares graduates for certification to teach middle school or junior high students.

Those who have a bachelor's degree in another field can enroll in a teacher preparation program at the master's degree level. Those in the elementary education master's program take courses specific to teaching children in elementary schools, such as curriculum development, literacy strategies and the foundations of education. Those in the secondary education master's program have the option to take extra courses to earn middle school level certification.
