School Selection Criteria

When choosing a school, prospective students should keep in mind these important considerations:

  • Degree levels for HVAC technicians are generally certificate programs, however a building or home inspector certificate or associate degree would provide broader knowledge and professional potential.
  • Licensure and certification varies by state so students are encouraged to review the requirements for their individual location, such as examinations or a minimum level of education, and enroll in an appropriate program.
  • Consider hands-on opportunities such as internships or professional experiences.

Certificate in HVAC Technology

Certificate programs in HVAC technology can take 1-2 years to complete. Coursework can include topics in air-conditioning systems, electrical systems, heating, air distribution and HVAC building codes.

Certificate in Home Inspection

Certificate programs in home inspection may include a wide variety of courses and can show students how to create inspection reports and perform basic computer work. Required courses may include plumbing, electrical systems, heating and cooling and ventilation systems.

Associate Degree in Building Inspection

Building inspection associate degree programs include general education courses, as well as basic construction principles. Courses for this program may include materials management, plan reading, electrical and mechanical inspection and HVAC systems inspection.

HVAC inspector programs are available at the certificate, diploma and associate's degree levels. Prospective students should look for accredited programs that will prepare them for licensure, as well as programs that offer hands-on experience or internships.
