Overview of ROTC Colleges in Georgia
The capital city of Atlanta is home to multiple college ROTC programs, but there are others spread across the entire state. It is common for Georgia schools in the same area to form partnership agreements to allow their students to participate in ROTC at a neighboring institution. Below are more detailed descriptions of some of the colleges and universities in Georgia with ROTC programs.
Emory University
Emory University is an academically rigorous university in Atlanta that prides itself on its strong research focus and diverse student body. Almost half of students across all majors work on research with a professor, and more than a quarter conduct their own independent research. Emory students can join the Air Force ROTC or the Army ROTC program at the host school Georgia Tech, which is also located in Atlanta. ROTC students will work toward their undergraduate degree and participate in any of the many sports or university clubs at Emory, while commuting by shuttle bus to Georgia Tech's campus for military science classes, physical fitness training, and leadership laboratories. Cadets and midshipmen can also participate in ROTC activities like Color Guard or the Ranger Challenge, and they're eligible for the same ROTC scholarship opportunities as Georgia Tech students.
University of Georgia
The University of Georgia was the first state-chartered public university in the country, and today it is a large school with almost 30,000 undergraduate students. As such, it offers students a wide range of academic paths and resources, more than 700 student clubs and organizations, and Division I athletics. To further enhance their undergraduate careers, students can join the Army or Air Force ROTC programs. Army ROTC is offered as an elective for up to two years with no military obligation, and the full program leads to a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Active Duty, Army Reserves, or the National Guard. Cadets who complete the full Air Force ROTC program also earn commission as an active duty officer. AFROTC includes classroom instruction on military history, air and space science, communication, and leadership, with ample opportunity to gain practical experience along the way.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Georgia Tech offers design and liberal arts degrees but is primarily focused on math, the sciences, and technology-oriented programs. It is the host university for Air Force and Army ROTC programs comprising students from up to 11 other schools in the Atlanta area. This creates a particularly diverse ROTC experience for cadets, since they interact with peers from so many different schools. Whichever branch you choose, you'll take military science classes and do physical fitness training while developing leadership skills. Exercises like the Army ROTC LDX (Leadership Development Exercise) apply the skills learned in class and leadership labs to hands-on field training. Cadets lead other cadets through simulated operations like combat, squad tactics, and survival techniques.
University of North Georgia
The University of North Georgia is one of six Senior Military Colleges in the country. The Corps of Cadets is the University of North Georgia's Army ROTC program that involves learning military discipline and leadership skills while earning a college degree. Cadets take one military science class each semester and participate in physical fitness training and leadership laboratories, with the opportunity to apply for additional training opportunities during school holidays. There are also many extracurricular activities to choose from, including the Golden Eagle Band, Rifle Team, Ranger Challenge, and more. During the academic year, upperclassmen are responsible for leading younger cadets and planning training exercises.
Spelman College
Spelman College is a Historically Black College as well as an all-female school, specializing in educating women of African descent. It is a small school, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate students, but it has a geographically diverse student body. Spelman College also provides the opportunity for its students to participate in any ROTC branch: Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps. Each one prepares its students for a career as a military officer through academic coursework, rigorous physical fitness and leadership training, and each one offers tuition assistance along the way. Students in any of these programs will be enrolled as full-time Spelman students, but will participate in ROTC on a different school's campus through a cross-town agreement.
