As of 2021, Quincy was home to 39,131 residents, based on U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The overwhelming majority of residents - nearly 90% - identified as white alone in 2021. Quincy is a center of employment and population for an expansive surrounding region that includes the town of Hannibal, Missouri, and other cities in both Illinois and Missouri.

Quincy, like the rest of Illinois, features a continental climate with cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers. The city offers many recreational activities, including watersports on the Mississippi River, walking and hiking amid picturesque scenery, a NASCAR-sanctioned raceway, community theater and numerous parks. Quincy has been nationally recognized for its outstanding historical architecture, much of which has been restored and revitalized in recent decades. Big-name stores can be found in the Quincy Mall, while the Historic Quincy Business District offers unique specialty shopping.

Higher Education

Quincy has a university and a handful of colleges. John Wood Community College is the area's major technical school, offering certificate and associate's degree programs in a range of subjects. Quincy University is a private liberal arts school with an enrollment of 1,188, as of Fall 2021. The school offers associate's through master's degrees in several subjects. Other nonprofit institutions in the area include Blessing Rieman College of Nursing and the Blessing Hospital schools of medical laboratory technology and radiologic technology.

Employment and Economy

The educational, health and social services sector is an anchor for the area's economy, while manufacturing and retail trade are also important. Major employers in Quincy's diverse local economy include Blessing Hospital, Quincy Medical Group, and the city's public school system. Each workday, the population increases as more than 8,000 workers commute to Quincy from neighboring areas.
