Credits earned through the certificate programs, however, may be transferred towards an associate's degree.

Four of Ohio's pastry arts certificate programs are described in more detail below, followed by a comparison table that highlights each school's features and tuition info.

Columbus State Community College

Columbus State Community College is located in Columbus and offers a baking certificate that teaches students how to prepare and aesthetically present a range of desserts, including cakes, pies and cookies. This program is geared toward career training for individuals who want to work in bakeries and other food establishments that serve pastry products, including dining facilities at hotels. Credits earned in this certificate program can be applied toward the school's associate degree program in restaurant and foodservice management with a concentration in baking and pastry arts.

Cuyahoga Community College

Cleveland's Cuyahoga Community College offers a 32-credit professional baking certificate program that trains students to work as pastry culinarians. Students enrolled in this program learn basic and advanced baking and business skills in courses like culinary fundamentals, pastry basics, customer service and pastry sales. The program also includes a field experience course, which gives students actual hands-on baking experience prior to entering the workforce. Students who wish to go on and earn a degree can apply credits earned in this program toward a degree in hospitality management with a specialization in culinary arts.

Owens Community College

Owens Community College has four campus locations that offer programs and training, including the baking and pastry program offered at the Toledo campus. This certificate program is designed for career training and advancement, and students that earn a certificate are typically prepared for employment in bakeshops, fine dining establishments and other food service facilities. Students enrolled in this 28-credit program take three courses focused on baking and pastry and learn hands-on skills, like cake decorating, breadmaking and pastry production.

Sinclair Community College

Located in Dayton, Sinclair Community College offers a bakery specialist certificate. Students who complete this 17-credit program can transfer credits earned toward an associate degree program in hospitality management and culinary arts. The program is designed to train individuals for work as professional bakers. It can also be useful for individuals who have culinary arts training, but desire further baking and pastry arts training for employment purposes. The program curriculum blends practical instruction with traditional lectures. Among other skills, students learn to prepare pastry doughs and fillings; craft specialty desserts like mousses, custards and merengues; and decorate cakes with icing, airbrush and sugar molding.
