There are many programs in Georgia that feature online courses; however, it's important to know that many of these programs require real-world field experiences and internships that take place in a classroom. Georgia-Based Online MAT Programs

Valdosta State University

Valdosta State University offers several online Master of Arts in Teaching degree programs in areas including special education, special education with an emphasis in deaf and hard of hearing, French language education, Spanish language education, and ESOL education. The online foreign language and ESOL MAT programs require 36 credits and make you eligible for initial teaching certification. The online deaf and hard of hearing MAT program also requires 36 credits and prepares you for a career as an audiologist or a teacher for hearing impaired students, among other options. The online MAT in Special Education requires 36 credits as well but is only for current special education teachers who spend a minimum of 20 hours a week in a classroom setting.

Columbus State University

Columbus State University has an online Master of Arts in Teaching program that features concentrations in K-12 computer science, physics, mathematics, Earth and space science, chemistry, and secondary biology. This particular online MAT program is designed for non-teachers who want to transition into teaching careers and already have an educational background in the fields of science, math, engineering, or technology. Over the course of this online program, you could take courses on such subjects as classroom management, foundations of special education, and assessment in education. After you complete the curriculum and pass the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) and edTPA exams, you will be recommended to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for teacher certification.

Georgia College

At Georgia College, which is located in Milledgeville, you can earn an online Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a concentration in special education, secondary education, or middle grades education. The MAT in Special Education program provides initial teacher preparation and requires 45 credits of coursework on topics like behavior management and language development as well as classroom internships. The online MAT in Secondary Teacher Education is a 2-year, part-time program that features 36 credits' worth of online classes, field experiences, and internships. This program prepares students without a professional educational background for certification in the fields of math, physics, political science, business, English, and history, among other concentrations. Georgia Southern University in Statesboro offers an online Master of Arts in Teaching degree program with concentrations in elementary education, health and psychical education, and special education. The online MAT in Elementary Education is a 45-credit hour program that prepares you for initial certification and requires courses on literacy instruction, critical pedagogy, and elementary science methods as well as internships. The 45-credit special education MAT requires that you have a bachelor's degree in a field like child and family development, counseling, English, math, social science, or psychology and leads to initial teaching certification. The online MAT in Health and Physical Education program is also for those who want to achieve teacher certification. It requires applicants to already have an undergraduate degree in exercise science, kinesiology, public health, or a related field.

Middle Georgia State University

Middle Georgia State University, located in Macon, has an online Master of Arts in Teaching degree program that features a concentration in secondary education. This program provides initial teaching certification for students with an undergraduate degree in English, history, science, technology, math, or engineering. You are required to earn 30 credits in this full-time program and complete field experiences in middle and high schools. You will begin your program in the summer and finish the following spring semester.

Entrance Information for Online MAT Programs

Online MAT programs will require you to hold a bachelor's degree, and depending on the program, you could be required to have a specific major. Most programs also require that you achieve a passing score on the GACE Program Admission tests; however, some programs will exempt you from this requirement if you have acceptable Praxis I, GRE, SAT, or ACT scores. You must also complete the Georgia Educator Ethics Entry Assessment and a background check. Additional requirements include a statement of intent and letters of recommendation.

Online MAT degree programs typically prepare you for initial teacher certification. The type of online MAT program you should apply to depends on your educational background and whether you are a current teacher or not.
