About Cleveland State University
Cleveland State University (CSU) is a public university located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to the main campus, which recently had a $500 million renovation, the university also has extended campuses in Solon and Westlake, Ohio.
In its 2013 Best Colleges edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked Cleveland State's graduate city management and urban policy program second in the country, while its graduate nonprofit management program was No. 12. Other CSU graduate programs that placed in the top 100 nationally include occupational therapy, physical therapy and public affairs as well as the university's part-time law program. The university has over 250 partnerships with businesses and foundations, including the NASA Glenn Research Center and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Academics
CSU has nine colleges, offering undergraduate and graduate students more than 200 majors. CSU offers flexible class schedules as 90% of students work part-time or full-time. Out of 575 full-time faculty members, 93% held a Ph.D. or the top degree in their field, according to the university's website in 2012.
In addition to the main Michael Schwartz Library, students can also study in the Cleveland-Marshall Law Library. Students can study abroad at partner schools in foreign countries, and Ohio residents who attend CSU can pay in-state tuition to study abroad with partner Ohio state schools with different study abroad programs.
When choosing classes, students have the option of registering for a learning community, which is a cluster of courses related to the student's major with about 25 students. The university also has an honors program, and transfer students are eligible for it. The University Scholars program is an option for students who took high school honors classes and have high tests scores, or for part-time students or students who were late in applying to the university.
CSU has research partnerships with many organizations including the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, Museum of Natural History, International Space University and Case Western Reserve University. The mechanical engineering program at CSU's Fenn College of Engineering, allows students to take part in research programs with the NASA Glenn Research Center, U.S. Department of Energy, General Electric and other sponsors. CSU also has one of the biggest anechoic chambers in the state.
Admissions
CSU uses an online or printed application. Applications are accepted year-round with admissions decisions typically made within 24 hours of receiving all materials. Students enrolling for the fall semester must accept their admission by the May 1 deadline. Students who wish to apply for the honors program should have their applications submitted by January 15 and need to fill out an additional honors application. Many graduate degree programs have their own individual application deadlines.
The Fenn College of Engineering and the College of Education and Human Services have their own minimum undergraduate admissions requirements. For the Department of Music, applicants must complete an additional application and audition. If applicants do not have college credits in music theory, they must take a written and oral placement test. AP and CLEP credits are accepted, and military personnel may be eligible for transfer credits.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Full-time, in-state undergraduate tuition for the 2012-2013 school year was $4,632 per semester. Full-time undergraduate tuition for out-of-state students is approximately $6,193.20 to $8,535 per semester, depending on the program. For full-time students, housing is estimated to cost $7,648 for the year and an example of a meal plan costs $4,200 for the year. Tuition for graduate programs varies.
Books are estimated to cost $800, and parking is expected to cost commuter students $1,800 for the year. Students enrolled in at least one academic credit hour at the main campus are charged a mandatory $25 fee each semester for a transit pass to ride public trains and buses for free.
Monthly interest free payment plans are available to all students, including students who are receiving financial aid; however, students need to re-enroll in a payment plan each semester. If the first payment is not paid by the due date, the student will be charged a $100 fee and will need to pay the balance in full or sign up for a new payment plan with different terms.
A scholarship committee considers all accepted incoming freshmen for scholarships, but some scholarships have their own applications. Merit scholarships available for incoming freshmen include the University Scholars Award, the Freshman Scholars Award, the Ruth Ann Moyer Scholarship and other scholarships, each with their own GPA, standardized test score or essay requirement. Assistantships are available for graduate students.
