School Selection Criteria

There are a number of factors to consider when seeking a program in this field.

  • Students are advised to select schools that specialize in areas that match their career goals through concentrations in specific multimedia technologies or careers.
  • Schools with more authentic learning experiences provide better portfolio- and resume-building opportunities than schools that don't provide a real-world context for projects.
  • Programs with access to professional-quality facilities, software and equipment are recommended for aspiring multimedia producers.

Multimedia Production Certificate

Students might need a basic familiarity with Windows and Mac computers before entering a multimedia certificate program. Courses are typically taught with a combination of lectures and projects.

Associate's Degree in Multimedia Production

In 2-year programs, students use software applications to produce digital audio and video, 2- and 3-dimensional animation, text, graphics and interactive elements in any combination. The coursework applies digital media principles to advertising, public relations, graphic design and other purposes.

Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia Production

A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Digital Arts program approaches multimedia production as a fine art. Another undergraduate option in multimedia production is a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Journalism program.

Master's Degree in Multimedia Production

Master's degree programs can focus on digital music production or on other multimedia concentrations. Students in multimedia and electronic music programs combine digital music with text, image and movement to create multimedia projects. Students might design individualized programs and learn through one-on-one lessons, seminars, group research and interdisciplinary courses.

There are a range of programs in multimedia production, from undergraduate certificates to master's degrees. Program emphases can vary by school, so it's important to review the program curriculum when deciding where to study.
