Job Description

Multimedia artists use multiple technologies and artistic methods to create special effects, characters or scenes in film, advertisements, website design, animation or video games. Storyboards and plot lines may also be created by multimedia artists to further develop a story in a video game or animated film. Multimedia artists use different technologies and elements like typography, images and music to create unique work.

Job Duties

Multimedia artists create realistic images by controlling light, color, shadow, texture and movements. While any initial ideas may be sketched by hand, they will be brought to life using computer software programs.

Multimedia artists create two and three-dimensional designs using modeling programs. These programs help make images move and allow characters to begin interacting with each other on screen. Opportunities are available to work on a wide range of projects including promotional materials, films, Web pages, illustrations and multimedia presentations.

Requirements

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that multimedia artists typically need a bachelor's degree due to the high level of technological skills needed for the job. Some art and design degree programs provide training in computers and different creative methods. Students can look for programs that offer classes in computer animation, digital arts, graphic design, two and three-dimensional design, drawing and illustration.

Multimedia artists must stay updated with the rapidly changing trends and upgrades in technology. Because new technology is created regularly, technologies and media platforms become quickly outdated. When applying for jobs, multimedia artists present employers with portfolios that represent their best work. Portfolios often help employers determine whether or not to hire a multimedia artist. Multimedia artists advance to higher positions such as art director or department supervisor through experience and accomplishment.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Multimedia artists use their artistic skills and computer training to develop two- and three-dimensional images that can be used for films, television shows, video games or other visual media. As their careers progress, they need to maintain and update their portfolios accordingly, showcasing their skill with traditional technologies and the latest multimedia creation tools.
