Oct 20, 2021

Essential Information

Although uncommon, a few schools offer online motorcycle repair and mechanics diploma programs. These blended format programs can typically be completed in less than one year, since the course content does not include general education. Hands-on auto repair exercises are usually required.

Motorcycle Repair Technician Diploma

Students in an online motorcycle repair technician diploma program can prepare for entry-level work in small engine repair garages, parts stores or motorcycle dealerships. Aspiring motorcycle technicians train in all aspects of small engine maintenance and repair, including brake, fueling and ignition systems. These programs have no prerequisites and are open to anyone interested in the field.

Information and Requirements

Online motorcycle repair diploma programs usually take about 6-9 months to complete. Programs typically include all course materials and textbooks in the cost of tuition. In some cases, a beginner set of repair tools is part of your tuition as well. Instructors and program administrators can be reached via e-mail or telephone. Programs are often self-paced with exams available online.

Course Topics

There are no general education classes in motorcycle repair diploma programs. In addition to general mechanical courses, students may learn how to service specific motorcycle types, like those manufactured by Harley-Davidson.

Four-Stroke Engines

In this class, students explore the parts and configurations of four-stroke engines. Proper service and maintenance procedures are discussed.

Two-Stroke Engines

Students examine the advantages and disadvantages of two-stroke engines. Additionally, they train in two-stroke engine parts and components and learn specific service techniques.

Drive Train and Starting Systems

This class explores basic gear types. Students are also taught to repair different clutches and transmissions.

Lubrication and Cooling Systems

In this course, students learn about the oil and lubricants necessary for two-stroke and four-stroke engines. Air and liquid cooling systems are covered as well.

Career Information

As of 2019, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the 17,400 motorcycle mechanics employed nationally earned a median salary of $37,600. During this time, the states with the highest salaries for motorcycle mechanics were Nevada, California, Georgia, New Jersey and New Hampshire. The BLS anticipated the addition of 1,400 jobs to the motorcycle mechanic field between 2019 and 2029--an increase of roughly 4%.

Continuing Education Information

Many employers provide on-the-job training for aspiring small engine mechanics. However, it may be helpful to pursue an internship or apprenticeship after earning an online diploma--hands-on experience is an important component of work in this field. Additional training in other types of small engine maintenance, such as outdoor power equipment and motorboats, may also be useful for work as a motorcycle mechanic.

Online diploma programs in motorcycle repair combine distance learning with hands-on exercises. Students who complete these programs may find additional training helpful to become motorcycle mechanics.
