MIS Certification and Certificate Program Overviews

Essential Information

MIS certification requires that information systems managers pass exams in a specific knowledge area of management information systems. Training for certification typically takes one to 1.5 years to complete and is commonly offered online. Before you can start these programs you need to have an undergraduate degree and complete a set of prerequisite business courses. In some instances, a university may request letters of recommendation or a resume. Successful completion of the certification process increases the chances of employment or advancement within a corporation. Potential career options include information systems manager and database administrator.

Certificate in MIS

A Certificate in MIS program introduces students to the increasing importance of computers in corporate America. Many MIS certificates are earned through post-baccalaureate programs designed for graduates of business degree programs. The certificate program can typically be completed in three semesters or less, and builds on a student's preexisting knowledge of business and management practices. Students enrolled in the program learn about development technologies in MIS, business intelligence and management information systems analysis. MIS certificate programs also prepare students for advanced study in the field.

Classes within a Certificate in MIS program focus on the analysis, design and management of information systems. Courses may address:

  • Modeling design and analysis
  • Information systems strategy and planning
  • Data communications
  • Data networking
  • Information technology architectures
  • Web development

MIS Certification

Many employers do not require information systems managers to be certified if they have the required skills and experience to fulfill the role. There is no primary governing body that offers certification. Instead, interested information systems managers can pursue certification through one of several organizations.

Microsoft offers certification for information systems managers who work with Windows Server 2003. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator certification is designed for managers who have at least one to 12 months of experience with networks that run on Windows. Additionally, the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) offers Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) and Certified IT Consultant (CITC) certifications for information systems managers.

Employment Prospects and Salary Info

Students who complete a MIS certificate program will be able to apply for a range of jobs in the information systems industry. Graduates with an advanced degree in business, such as an MBA, have the best chances of securing steady employment in roles such as:

  • Computer systems analyst
  • Database administrator
  • Information systems manager

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of working database administrators was projected to grow 10% between 2019 and 2029, which is much faster than average. The median salary for database administrators as of 2019 was $93,750, per the BLS.

Continuing Education Information

A master's degree in management information systems is an option for students who have completed the certificate program. It can be completed in two years of full-time study and prepares graduates for advanced job opportunities with heightened responsibility and greater pay. Some master's degree programs culminate in a capstone project that must be completed in the final year of enrollment.

Completing a MIS certificate program and becoming MIS certified may help you advance your career as a database administrator. These programs are typically post-baccalaureate programs for students who have already earned an undergraduate degree in business.
