Mendota Heights had approximately 11,665 residents based on 2021 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, with nearly 85 percent of the population identifying as white in 2021. The median household income was $119,347 for the period 2016-2020, compared to a statewide median of $73,382. This made Mendota Heights one of the most affluent communities in the United States, with only 4.2 percent of the population living under the poverty line.

Mendota Heights sponsors a number of community activities and events throughout the year, including a Fourth of July fireworks display, an annual outdoor summer concert series, a Halloween bonfire and a winter tree-lighting ceremony. The city has relatively little in the way of full-time cultural venues, but nearby Minneapolis and Saint Paul are known for their vibrant arts and culture scenes, boasting such attractions as the Guthrie Theater, Walker Art Center and Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis and Minnesota Public Radio's Fitzgerald Theater in Saint Paul.

Higher Education in the Mendota Heights Area

The Twin Cities are home to several highly regarded institutions of higher learning. Minneapolis, the larger city, boasts the main campus of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, a world-renowned research institution and one of the country's largest universities by student enrollment. Augsburg College, a small, private liberal arts school, neighbors the university, while across the Mississippi River, Saint Paul boasts such highly ranked private schools as Hamline University and the University of Saint Thomas. Macalester College, also in Saint Paul, is known for being the alma mater of former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan.

Mendota Heights Economic Facts

Mendota Heights is primarily a residential bedroom community for the greater Minneapolis area. Most of the employed residents are white-collar workers in such fields as finance, insurance, public administration and health care. Many top executives, lawyers and corporate managers live in Mendota Heights and work in different cities across the metropolitan area. The greater Twin Cities region is well-known for its diverse and healthy economy and is home to such nationally-known corporate employers as the Target Corporation, 3M, Ecolab and U.S. Bancorp.
