Medical Schools in Arizona with Degree Program Options

There are very few options in Arizona for students searching for medical schools. One school offers only a doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine, while the other hosts four programs, including a few dual majors in medicine, business, research and public health. Admission to medical programs is often competitive, with high standards for applying students. All medical programs incorporate clinical and practicum requirements, in addition to classroom instruction and laboratory training.

Career Requirements

Aspiring doctors in Arizona need to become licensed before they can begin practicing. The Arizona Medical Board requires all prospective doctors to graduate from an approved medical program, complete one year of residency or internship experience and pass a national examination.

Midwestern University - Glendale

Midwestern University - Glendale is a healthcare-oriented institution that was founded as the American College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1900. This university offers a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) that consists of two years of didactic instruction and two years of clinical rotations. The DO program also prepares graduates eligible for postdoctoral residency. Additionally, program graduates exit with the fundamentals necessary to operate in many clinical settings and successfully provide patient care. Incoming students must receive acceptable scores on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and hold a bachelor's degree to be considered for admission.

University of Arizona

Established in 1885, the University of Arizona in Tucson grants the only Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in the state. The College of Medicine opened its doors in 1967.

Often called ArizonaMed, the MD program can be finished in four years and allows students to study at the Phoenix or Tucson campuses. While the programs in each campus are similar, the Phoenix program focuses largely on personalized medicine, biomedical informatics and the completion of a scholarly project. Students get to learn about organ systems, ethics, social science and clinical research. They are also provided with a medical simulation program, ensuring they exit with the fundamentals needed to succeed in the medical field.

The MD/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) dual-degree program is only available at the Tucson campus and was designed for students interested in careers in academic medicine, biomedical research or clinical research training. Students enrolled in this program can choose from Ph.D. concentrations in biomedical engineering, immunobiology, nutritional sciences and genetics.

Offered in conjunction with the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, the MD/Master of Public Health dual-degree program emphasizes clinical leadership. Students become exposed to the essentials of disease prevention, public health and the implementation of health programs. Graduates can seek leadership career positions in public health and clinical settings.

The Eller College of Management helps administer the MD/Master of Business Administration dual-degree program, which incorporates aspects of business with medicine. This program takes five years to complete, including two years of medical study, one year of business study and two years of combined study.
