Students interested in mediation training can find programs geared toward those becoming lawyers as well as those who wish to become professional mediators. Those interested in becoming lawyers can participate in mediation clinic programs to learn skills in conflict resolution and negotiation. For students who wish to become professional mediators without completing a law degree, programs in conflict resolution are available. According to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Rule 8 of the Uniform Rules on Dispute Resolution, mediators are required to complete at least 30 hours of mediation training. Since mediation trainees must participate in a minimum of three role-playing coached mediation sessions, mediation training programs generally include this practice.
Individuals can complete mediation training through the Harvard Mediation Program (HMP), which is a part of Harvard Law School in Cambridge. The HMP is housed within the Student Practice Organization and is run by students. A 32-hour basic mediation training program is available twice a year, in the fall and spring semesters. The class offers mock mediation sessions and training in theoretical concepts. By completing this class, students meet the Massachusetts requirement to practice mediation in courts with production of confidentiality. Students are also required to spend two semesters mediating court or out-of-court cases upon completion of basic training. Harvard Law School also offers a negotiation and mediation clinical program for lawyers.
