There are many programs that combine the MBA and another graduate or doctoral degree in a related field. Some are available online and at leading universities, but all are highly competitive programs.
Dual MBA and Doctoral Degree Programs
Dual MBA degree programs combine business administration with law, the sciences, or humanities. Here are a few to consider.
MBA-JD Program
This is a three-year program that prepares students for business and law. Professors from both the business school and the law school teach the students. This program allows students to graduate earlier than their peers. They will gain insights into business and law policies, theories, and practice. Some of the courses in this program include Advanced Bankruptcy, International Commercial Arbitration, and Mergers & Acquisitions.
MBA-DBA Program
This dual degree program includes courses that fulfill the requirements for a Master of Business Administration degree and Doctor of Business Administration degree. Both degrees can be completed in three to four years. Students must earn a bachelor's degree in business administration first. Some of the courses that are included in this program include Advanced Organizational Behavior, Global Leadership Styles, and Corporate Communication Strategies.
MBA-PhD Program
This program combines a Master of Business Administration degree and a PhD in the sciences or humanities. It can be completed in seven years. The coursework is dependent on the specific subject area chosen by the student. Some of the business courses in this program include Basics of Accounting, Managing Groups and Teams, and Probability Modeling and Statistics.
MBA-MA Program
This program combines a Master of Business Administration degree with a Master of Arts degree. There are several programs available at various universities, such as Global Affairs. Some of the courses in this dual degree program include Applied Methods of Analysis, History of the Present, and Economics: Principles and Applications.
MBA-MEM Program
This dual degree includes a Master of Business Administration degree and a Master of Environmental Management degree. Students may have to apply to both programs separately. Some of the courses in this program include Ecosystems and Landscapes, Microeconomics for Environmental Management, and Qualitative Social Science Research.
Program Admission Requirements
There are many varying admission requirements for programs that combine an MBA with another degree. The requirements for the MBA-JD program typically include separate admissions applications to the law school and business school. The MBA-PhD program requires separate admissions applications as well.
A high GPA and excellent English language skills are required to enter a MBA-DBA dual degree program. Students are required to have a bachelor's degree in business administration or a similar major to take the master level courses. However, some universities accept students that complete other types of bachelor's degrees, if they complete additional courses. Usually, after completing the requirements for the master's degree, students can take the doctoral level courses. There may be other requirements for taking the doctoral level courses, such as completing a general assessment test.
An MBA dual degree program can cover a broad range of topics in business administration and a related field, including law, sciences, humanities, arts, or environmental management. Requirements for admission vary depending on the specific program, but typically applicants must have a bachelor's in a related field, and a certain GPA.
