Schools That Offer a Master's in Education in Dallas, TX

Southern Methodist University

SMU offers a Master of Bilingual Education and a Master of Education: Educator Preparation program. The school also offers Master of Education degrees with specializations that include special education, ESL, gifted and talented, urban education, mathematics, STEM, literacy studies, and early literacy. Depending on the specialization, curricula are designed for either classroom teachers, educational specialists, or both. These degrees prepare professionals to work with special populations and to pursue additional career opportunities, including add-on certifications.

University of North Texas at Dallas

The University of North Texas at Dallas offers a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. This degree consists of 36 credit hours that are meant to help certified teachers develop the skills needed to work with all levels of English language learners. The university also offers a Master of Educational Leadership. This is a 30-credit-hour program that is designed to teach the skills necessary for leadership roles in K-12 schools, such as principals and directors. Students who graduate with the educational leadership degree also receive an Advancing Educational Leadership Certificate (AEL) and will be eligible to earn their Texas principal certification.

Dallas Baptist University

Dallas Baptist University offers a 36-hour, non-thesis Master of Education in Higher Education. This degree program is designed to prepare enrollees for leadership roles on college and university campuses. Students can choose one of two tracks. The administration track requires 24 credit hours of instruction in core courses and an additional 12 credit hours in one of the following specializations: leadership studies, distance learning, student affairs, or community college leadership. The instructional track requires 18 credit hours of core courses and 18 credit hours in a teaching field. The university also offers several other Master of Education degrees in areas that include bilingual education, special education, kinesiology, curriculum and instruction, school counseling, educational leadership, and reading and English as a second language.

Texas Christian University

Situated about 30 miles from Dallas in Fort Worth, TCU offers a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Counseling, and Higher Educational Leadership. Graduate students are given the opportunities to learn by doing in a community designed to help them gain the skills they need to pursue teaching careers or advance to positions of leadership. For students who have not yet completed their undergraduate degree, TCU offers and accelerated master's program that allows students to complete their bachelor's and master's in a span of five years. This option is available for the special education and curriculum and instruction programs only.

Admission Requirements

The above programs generally require applicants to submit the following documents in order to be considered for enrollment: an application, bachelor's degree transcripts showing an acceptable GPA, an essay describing professional goals, letters of recommendation, and a resume. Depending on the program being applied for, students might also have to submit GRE scores, a school service record, TOEFL scores (for foreign students), and a criminal background check.
