Mammography Continuing Education Options

Mammography, a science under the umbrella of radiography, is a regulated profession that requires state licensure. Some states require that mammography technologists complete regular continuing education (CE) activities to maintain an active license. Additionally, the American Society of Radiologic Technicians (ASRT) offers an optional professional certification that must be renewed biennially with CE credits. There are several approved activities acceptable as continuing education for these purposes, and some activities may be worth more credits than others.

Classroom Education

The most standard method of continuing education is through classes taught by various lecturers and specialists. These classes can be found in multiple settings, including colleges, hospitals or conferences dedicated to medical professions. The coursework introduces new mammography technology, policy changes, image reading and more efficient ways to diagnose and treat patients.

Online Education

Some credits can be earned in alternative methods that may fit into a mammography technologist's schedule better than attending classes or conferences. One option is to complete self-paced reading assignments and quizzes offered online by different organizations. The ASRT offers courses in mammography and other radiography disciplines through the organization's website. For those without Internet capability, self-guided courses are also available in professional journals, on CD or video.

Publications and Lectures

The ASRT lists accredited activities that may count towards a mammography technologist's CE credits. Some or all continuing education requirements may be satisfied through research and publication of articles, medical journals and books dedicated to advancing the science of radiography. Participating in professional lectures or teaching opportunities may also count toward CE credit. In many cases, such activities are subject to approval of the state or ASRT.

Continuing Education Requirements

The American Society of Radiologic Technicians requires all of their certified mammography technicians to earn 24 CE credits every two years to maintain the professional credential. State regulations for continuing education vary; some states do not require CE credit, while others may adopt the standards set forth by the ASRT. In some instances, specific topics must be covered, such as mammography, safety measures and patient care practices.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job openings for radiologic technologists and technicians, such as mammographers, should increase by 7% from 2019-2029. As of May 2020, the BLS reported that radiologic technologists earned a median salary of $61,900 annually.
