List of Free Language Therapy Courses for Teachers

The courses and resources on this list should be helpful to currently working and potential teachers in the language therapy field. These are available for free but do not offer academic credit. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's OpenCourseWare program offers students lecture notes and optional readings and assignments in addition to optional exams to take and textbooks for students to purchase, if they wish.

Free Online Language Therapy Courses


  • Acoustics of Speech and Hearing explores how humans produce, receive and spread speech. Topics include acoustic cues, mechanical mechanisms used to analyze sound, cochlear mechanics, lumped elements and psychoacoustics. Students also have the option of completing assignments and exams.
  • Advanced Speaking and Critical Listening Skills explores various types of human vocal interactions, including formal presentations, interviews, group discussions and classroom interactions. Learners pursuing this course will study what is considered standard in communication based on cultural influences, as well as issues in pronunciation and intonation, and develop critical listening skills for use in the professional realm.
  • Language and Mind instructs students on the representation of language in the human mind, the link between thought and language, computational modeling of human language acquisition and how children gather language. Topics covered in lecture notes include the areas of the brain and the structure of language. Teachers taking this course will have access to many related resources, such as the Cognitive Science Society, the Psychonomic Society and the American Philological Association.
  • Language Processing examines ambiguity resolution, prosodic information, linguistic complexity and linguistic representations. Optional reading topics include the dependency locality theory, working memory, sentence comprehension and discourse coherence. Also included in the course are examples of past student review papers for users to look over.
  • Speech Communication includes past assignments and their solutions and lecture notes focused on lexical access, hearing loss, aerodynamics of the vocal tract and damaged speech production. Students will learn about the building blocks of language and sound pattern.

Open University

  • From Sound to Meaning: Hearing, Speech and Language studies how language is understood and instructs learners on grammatical terminology, types of sounds used in human speech and how language is processed in the human brain. Questions are included within course lessons.
  • Language as a Medium for Teaching and Learning studies language as a cultural asset and is intended to help teachers link theoretical discussions to professional use. They will learn about second language learning methods and how classroom interaction analysis can be accomplished through a sociocultural methodology. Activities are included within lessons.
