Internet Marketing Job Description

Internet marketing specialists, sometimes called digital marketing managers or marketing coordinators, are in charge of online marketing, advertising, and promotional materials for a business. This can include social media posts, ad banners on websites, and videos. Their main objective is to research and implement the best ways to get their brand's presence noticed online in order to drive more users to their website or even to visit their business' physical location. It is their responsibility to perform market research, implement the use of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and stay up-to-date on the latest technologies. They are also in charge of developing ad strategies and campaigns that align with the company's brand as well as current trends.

Job Duties

While the tasks of an internet marketing coordinator vary with the company they work for, a few specific duties include:

  • Collaborating with team members, such as the art department
  • Reaching out to social media influencers to develop marketing opportunities
  • Responding to comments and concerns on the brand's social media accounts
  • Monitoring SEO, metrics, and customer reviews
  • Creating, editing, publishing, and sharing engaging content
  • Analyzing trends and audience interest to appeal to ideal demographic

Skills and Experience

Internet marketing requires a blend of creative, social, and technical skills. These specialists must have great written and verbal communication skills, be able to think critically and solve problems, be solid in SEO and keyword research, and have exceptional competence in technological applications and social media. They must also be able to work successfully in a team environment and deliver creative content, such as writing posts, creating images, or editing videos, when needed. Many employers require previous experience in social media, internet marketing, and content management.

Education Requirements

Most marketing management positions require applicants have an undergraduate degree. Bachelor's degrees in marketing, business analytics, computer science, communications, or another business field are all possible options. Some universities have marketing programs that offer courses in social media and digital marketing, or independent courses in business administration can be taken as well. Since many jobs require previous experience, a good way to break into the industry would be to seek an internship in marketing or business, which can be obtained through a college program.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an expected job growth of 8% for marketing managers from 2018-2028. This projection is higher than the national average for all jobs in that decade.
