International Marketing Major: Information and Requirements

Graduate students can focus their studies on international marketing to learn how management and marketing principles apply across countries and cultures. Most international marketing majors in master's degree programs are required to study abroad and may spend as much as a semester on international study tours. These degree programs are geared toward students interested in working for large corporations that foster an international presence. Students who want to apply to a master's degree program in international marketing should have a bachelor's degree in a subject such as marketing, business, finance or accounting. They also should have the ability to speak and read in one or more foreign languages.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't provide exact data for the field of international marketing, it did report that marketing managers in general held about 270,200 jobs in the United States in 2020 (www.bls.gov). The employment rate for marketing managers is expected to grow by 7% between 2019 and 2029, which is faster than the average rate of employment growth. Median annual wages for marketing managers in 2020 were about $142,170. While some international marketing managers might be employed at U.S. firms that maintain an international presence, they often are required to travel a great deal.

Graduate programs in international marketing, such as a master's degree in international marketing, teach students the principles of marketing and management, as well as how to apply them to international businesses that work with various cultures around the world.
