Within these programs, industrial design is learned through classroom work, studio sessions, and internships. Students will need to submit a portfolio along with their standard admissions application materials. Read about the one school in Oregon that teaches industrial design.

University of Oregon

The University of Oregon (UO) is located in Eugene, about 110 miles south of Portland. Students can pursue a four-year bachelor's degree in material and product studies. The program can lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Students learn how manufactured products are invented, used and produced, and they get to make use of digital imaging, laser-cutting, digital loom, and other art equipment facilities at the school. Some of the program course requirements include print digital arts, drawing, designing tools, and computer-assisted design.

Those interested in a fine arts degree in product design can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with an additional year of study beyond the B.A. or B.S. requirements. Students in the BFA program have access to studios and a digital fusion lab, and they also have interdisciplinary opportunities with the school's architecture, business and journalism programs. The 42-credit BFA program combines classroom learning, studio practice, and internships to provide practical experience opportunities. During product design internships, students might work in professional studios, research centers, and manufacturing settings to learn about client interaction and the methods used in design and production.
