Health Care Degrees in Maine with Course and Program Overviews

Essential Information

There are several public and private 2-and 4-year colleges and universities in Maine that offer some kind of health care program, including health information technology and nursing. Many are associate's and bachelor's degree programs, but graduate studies exist for those who want to pursue advanced or leadership careers in health care. Students of these programs are often required to complete laboratory hours, clinical practica, didactic training and externships. The programs below include but are not limited to:

Central Maine Community College

Auburn-based Central Maine Community College offers both administrative and practical health care programs, including an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Medical Assistant, an AAS in Medical Coding and Electronic Health Records, and an Associate in Science (AS) in Nursing. The 66- to 67-credit medical assistant program includes labs and traditional classroom lectures in medical terminology, clinical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology, as well as a 240-hour externship. The medical coding and electronic health records associate-level program consist of 62-63 credits and coursework that examines health information technology, health delivery, and health care statistics. The 68-credit entry-level nursing program provides students with didactic and practical training. Courses cover anatomy and physiology, nursing across the lifespan, and microbiology. Additionally, students will complete clinical experience, providing them with hands-on training in the field.

Husson University

Bangor's Husson University offers several degree programs in health care through the College of Health and Education. The school offers a Master of Science (MS) in Occupational Therapy and a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Students can also complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), as well as a MS in Family and Community Nurse Practitioner. The bachelor's program integrates general education coursework with major-specific courses, labs, and clinical experiences. Program coursework includes human growth and development, nursing intervention, nutrition, and health assessment. Additionally, students must complete at least 840 hours of clinical training at a designated facility. The 44-credit MS program for nurse practitioners requires students to complete 714 hours of clinical training. Master's coursework delves into advanced pathophysiology, rural community health, family health, and several research-based classes.

Kennebec Valley Community College

Fairfield's Kennebec Valley Community College offers ten programs in allied health, such as advanced emergency care, health information technology, medical assisting, physical therapy assistant, and respiratory therapy. The 64-credit medical assisting program integrates didactic training with labs and a clinical practicum. Students examine clinical procedures, insurance coding for the medical office, advanced clinical theory, and anatomy. The 67-credit health information technology program trains students on the most current technology in the field, as well as patient data systems. In addition to intensive didactic training, students participate in several directed-practice experiences and seminars. Program coursework includes management concepts for health care organizations, health data collection, coding and classification systems, and software applications. The 73-credit respiratory therapy program includes coursework in respiratory care, anatomy, therapeutic modalities, and cardiopulmonary diagnostics, as well as three clinical practicum experiences.

Saint Joseph's College of Maine

Standish-based Saint Joseph's College of Maine offers a BS in Health and Wellness Promotion and a BSN. The health and wellness promotion program implements a holistic curriculum, covering topics such as sports training, community nutrition, health organization, and health psychology. Additional coursework includes disease prevention, stress management, health promotion, and internship experience. The BSN program requires students to complete a handful of core classes within the major, in addition to electives and fieldwork experience. Nutrition, concepts of professional nursing in society, mental health concepts, and community nursing coursework is included.

Southern Maine Community College

Located in South Portland, Southern Maine Community College offers associate degrees in nursing, surgical technology, and radiography. Students study medical terminology, billing procedures, medical ethics and law, pharmacology, and disease pathology. The curriculum for the 62-credit program will integrate general education coursework, classes specific to the nursing program, and practical training.

University of Maine

Orono's University of Maine offers several nursing programs through the School of Nursing, including a BSN, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Registered Nurse (RN) to MSN. The BSN option includes coursework in nursing care management of adults, fundamentals of pharmacology, health-related research, and community health care. The school's MSN program has two options: a MSN to Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and an Individualized MSN with two tracks.

The MSN-FSN option requires students to complete clinical hours and didactic training within a handful of nursing subject areas, including theory development in nursing, family in health and illness, advanced pathophysiology, and nursing research. The individualized MSN program is designed for students who are interested in a career as either nurse educators or nurse administrators and allows students to tailor their curriculum based on their interests. Additionally, students must complete fieldwork or clinical experience in order to gain hands-on training in the field. In addition to nursing programs, the health professions and biomedical sciences division offer programs in clinical laboratory sciences, nutrition, kinesiology, and communication sciences.

University of Maine at Augusta

The Augusta campus of the University of Maine offers an AS in Medical Laboratory Technology, as well as two nursing programs. The medical laboratory technology program requires that students complete at least 70 credits, including 35 credits within the major. Program-specific coursework includes phlebotomy, hematology, clinical chemistry, and blood banking, along with a 12-credit practicum that will take place in a hospital setting. The associate-level nursing program consists of about 70 total credits, including 37-38 within the nursing program. Students study the fundamentals of nursing, nursing care of adults, and nursing care of the family. Students participate in several clinical experiences at various healthcare facilities. The 120-credit RN to BSN program offers an integral-holistic curriculum that incorporates coursework in nursing research, health assessment through the lifespan, and pharmacology for nurses.

University of Maine at Farmington

The Farmington-based campus of the University of Maine offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Health Information Systems and a BS in Community Health Education. The 128-credit health information systems program requires students to complete 60 credits within the major, including healthcare management, principles of epidemiology, and introduction to community health. The 128-credit BS in Community Health Education program integrates didactic training with various community and service experiences. Students must take 64 credits within the major, including resource management and grants, principles of disease prevention, and health education planning. Additionally, all students are required to complete a 16-credit fieldwork experience in a community health setting of their choice.

University of New England

Biddeford's the Westbrook College of Health Professions at the University of New England offers programs in about eight health care fields. Nursing students can complete a MS in Nursing Anesthesia that includes 54 credits of coursework in pharmacology, anesthesia, airway management, and physical assessment, along with five clinical practicum experiences. Occupational therapy students can complete programs at the bachelor's and master's level, and they have access to the Community Occupational Therapy Clinic. The 108-credit MS in Physician Assistant program integrates didactic coursework with 12 months of clinical training, providing students with the necessary training to work successfully in the health care industry. Coursework for this program will cover a multitude of topics, including emergency medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacology, anatomy, surgery and epidemiology, and evidence-based medicine.

University of Southern Maine

The University of Southern Maine's School of Science, Technology, and Health offer several health care programs, including a BS in Health Sciences and a BSN. The 120-credit health sciences program allows students to choose from four tracks, such as wellness, pre-professional, healthcare administration, or occupational therapy. All students will complete general education coursework and 33 credits within the health sciences field, including human anatomy and physiology, human nutrition, multicultural human development, and wellness education. All program tracks consist of 30 credits, and coursework will vary depending on the concentration. The 40-credit MS in Applied Medical Sciences program integrates core coursework with a seminar and final thesis or externship experience. Students choose from four areas of concentration, including toxicology and cancer biology, immunology and infectious disease, epidemiology, and biotechnology.

Career Requirements

Some health care professionals must be licensed, and licensure requirements often include completion of a recognized training program and an exam. For example, in Maine, nurses must complete an approved program in professional nursing and pass the licensing exam.
