GED Test Information
The official GED test given in Kansas is available in both English and Spanish. To pass, individuals must earn a score of at least 145 on each of the four subject tests, as well as an overall combined score of at least 580. Students who successfully pass the four tests earn a Kansas State High School Diploma. Special testing accommodations can be arranged for students with emotional, learning, cognitive or psychological disabilities. The GED exam is taken on a computer but cannot be taken remotely; possible testing locations include community colleges, adult education centers and dedicated GED testing centers.
Eligibility Requirements
Students wishing to take the official GED exam must be at least 18 years old, although special considerations can be made for students who are at least 16 years of age. Eligible students must not be enrolled in any accredited high school, must not have already graduated from an accredited high school and must not currently hold a GED diploma. For the first few attempts, Kansas does not enforce a retesting waiting period for students who fail to pass all or part of the exam, but after three tries a 60-day waiting period is imposed.
GED Programs in Kansas
Over 25 adult educational centers in the state of Kansas offer GED preparation programs at little or no cost to students. These GED prep classes are typically offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. Some may even be provided to students online.
Enrollment Process
The first step for registering for the test or finding preparation programs is creating a portal account on the GED website (www.ged.com). Formal preparation and practice tests are not a requirement, but students wishing to take advantage of a prep program can find a list of adult education centers through the Kansas Board of Regents (www.kansasregents.org). An orientation process may be required to bring students together to fill out the necessary paperwork, meet with instructors and learn what to expect of the program.
Practice Opportunities
Once registered or enrolled in a program, students begin by taking tests to assess what areas they need the most help with. The GED program's main areas of study are mathematical reasoning, science, social studies and reasoning through language arts. Once students have mastered these study areas, they take practice tests. The practice tests help students determine whether or not they are ready to take the actual GED test.
