Florida University Requirements for Student Applicants

There are several admission and application requirements that undergraduate and graduate students must meet when applying to a public university in Florida.

Basic Requirements for Florida University Applicants

Minimum requirements for admittance into a State University System of Florida school are set by the Florida Board of Governors, although each university within the system may set standards above and beyond the established criteria. In addition to meeting minimum admissions standards, students are also required to submit specific application materials.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Incoming, first-time college students applying to a school in the State University System of Florida need to submit the following application materials:

  • A high school transcript reflecting completion of these classes:
    • 4 English courses
    • 4 mathematics courses
    • 3 natural science courses
    • 3 social science courses
    • 2 foreign language courses
    • 2 elective credits
  • SAT scores
  • ACT scores

A prospective student's cumulative grade point average must be at least 3.0, or between 2.5 and 3.0 so long as stipulated minimum scores are met on the SAT or ACT. Homeschooled applicants must submit credentials deemed equivalent to traditional students.

Graduate Admission Requirements

Admissions regulations for graduate programs at the master's degree level or higher, including professional degree programs, are set by the university's board of trustees in accordance with the Florida Board of Governors. Like prospective undergraduate students, those pursuing graduate study at a school in the State University System of Florida must submit the following basic items:

  • Application
  • Application fee
  • College transcript from an accredited university, showing the completion of a baccalaureate degree
  • Graduate admissions test scores

Beyond that, requirements vary considerably by program. Graduate applicants must look to the individual universities for more information about requirements for a particular graduate program, since most admissions decisions are made by the relevant department.
