University of Miami

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami offers students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, as well as a combined bachelor's and master's degree program.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

The degree program includes electrical engineering and audio engineering options. In the electrical engineering option, students learn about the design and development of electrical and electronic devices and systems. They typically pursue fundamental engineering, math science and physical science courses in the first two years of the program. The remainder of the program is primarily focused on electrical engineering courses. A focus is also placed on computer hardware and software skills to prepare students for their careers. Several courses and labs in electronics are included.

The 5-year program includes the same courses as the B.S. program in the first three years, then the last two years are made up 55 credits worth of graduate level courses. Graduates of this program earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Florida International University

The electrical and computer engineering department at Florida International University offers several electrical engineering programs. Students can also pursue a dual 5-year program leading to a bachelor's degree and master's degree in electrical engineering.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

The bachelor's degree program includes 128 credit hours. The program focuses on concepts involving the application, study and design of electronic, electrical and electromagnetic structures. Upon successful completion of the program, students can enter the field or pursue advanced studies in electrical engineering or related areas. All undergraduates take classes in basic and advanced electronics. Specializations are available in power, control systems, communications, computer architecture and bio-engineering.

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

The program can be completed in either a thesis or non-thesis track. The thesis track includes an oral exam, 24 credit hours and at least six thesis credit hours. The non-thesis track requires a graduate project and completion of 27 credit hours. Graduate students are able to take advantage of facilities that include the Center for Advanced Technology and Education.

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering

To enter this program, you must have a master's degree in the field. The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering requires a minimum of 45 credit hours beyond a master's degree and at least 18 credit hours in a 1-year, full-time residency, and a minimum of 75 credit hours beyond a bachelor's degree. Students must also complete and defend a dissertation and pass an exam.

Florida Atlantic University

Students are able to study electrical engineering at three degree levels through the university's Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

The program includes courses such as control systems, communication systems, electronics, circuits, microcontrollers and digital signal processing. A variety of lab courses are also required. Students can also pursue elective courses in electrical engineering, technical subjects and mathematics.

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

The master's degree program can be completed in either the thesis or non-thesis option. A wide variety of specialization areas include topics such as digital signal processing, systems and robotics, alternative energy systems or bioengineering. Courses include subjects such as control systems, digital processing of signals and robotic applications.

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering
