College Selection Criteria

When looking for a program there are a number of things to keep in mind, including the following:

  • Look for a program that prepares students for the National Board for Certification in Dental Lab Technology exam.
  • Extensive labs are part of dental laboratory technology programs, but some schools offer evening or weekend options, which may benefit working students.
  • Search for schools that offer internship opportunities, which give students applied practice in dental lab technology.
  • Students who may eventually continue on to a 4-year degree should pursue an associate's degree rather than a certificate, since an associate's program includes not only dental lab courses, but also general education courses that can be transferred.

Aspiring dental lab technicians may find a number of training programs scattered across the country. When looking for a program, students need to consider what their career goals are in addition to the location of the school and the cost of attendance.
