There are several Christian colleges of different sizes that offer unique meteorology degree programs, as well as a variety of ways for students to invest in their spiritual lives. Here we discuss some of these Christian-affiliated schools with meteorology programs in detail and what makes them unique.
University of the Incarnate Word
The University of the Incarnate Word in Texas had a little over 5,558 undergraduate students in 2018, according to the NCES. The university offers a unique degree program in broadcast meteorology and a traditional program in meteorology that covers topics in weather analysis and forecasting, climate change and the dynamics of the atmosphere. Students receive hands-on training and develop their skills in the field through research activities, seminars and internship opportunities. The program also incorporates Christian service by training students to make ethical and scientific decisions for the public concerning weather conditions. Students on campus can also further develop their faith through worship services, service-learning opportunities, Bible study groups, spiritual retreats, a peer minister program and spiritual counseling.
Valparaiso University
Indiana's Valparaiso University offers a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology that is heavy in chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. The program includes a unique hands-on, 11-day field study that allows students to study and observe storms in the Great Plains. The university also has relationships with the National Weather Service and other agencies to provide students with a variety of internship and paid cooperative education opportunities. Students can grow spiritually through chapel and worship services, prayer events and several campus ministries, like Peer Ministry, Residential Ministry and Social Action Leadership Team (SALT). As of 2018, the NCES reported that the university had a little over 3,199 undergraduate students.
Northland College
Students at Northland College in Wisconsin can celebrate and invest in their spiritual lives through all-faiths campus worship services and spiritual retreats. According to the NCES, the undergraduate college had close to 582 students in 2018. The college offers a major in meteorology that gives students the chance to observe weather in the field and gain experience with modern instrumentation. The school's unique location on Lake Superior allows students to study storms, snowfall events, wind patterns and more. Students in the program also receive training in computer simulation models and may choose to join Weather Club.
