Description of Christian Colleges with Dance Degrees

Most commonly offered as undergraduate degrees, dance programs are available to students at several Christian colleges. Students looking to attend one of these schools may want to consider the size of the institution and/or how the school will help them grow spiritually. Here we discuss some of these factors for a few Christian colleges with dance degree programs.

Randolph College

Virginia's Randolph College had 600 undergraduate students in 2018, according to the NCES. The college offers a minor, Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance. Students in the program participate in performances, have the opportunity to choreograph their own pieces and are trained in various styles, including jazz, classical ballet and modern dance. The college's Dean of Students Office is responsible for helping students of all faiths grow in their beliefs through different spiritual organizations, such as Campus Outreach (Bible studies).

Belhaven University

Belhaven University's Dance Department offers a minor, BA, BFA and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance that trains students in choreography, dance technology, dance kinesiology, ballet, modern dance, dance pedagogy and more. Students in these programs can participate in local dance festivals, numerous performances and several different dance organizations on campus, including the National Honor Society for Dance Arts or the Dance Ministry Ensemble. As of 2018, this Mississippi university had 2,307 undergraduate students, per the NCES. Students on campus can grow spiritually by participating in worship sessions, Bible studies and different ministries on campus, such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) or InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

Wittenberg University

Ohio's Wittenberg University helps students grow in their faith and find fellowship through several spiritual organizations on campus, including Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU), Athletes in Action and IMANI Gospel Choir. The university offers a dance major that culminates in a two-part comprehensive examination. Students in the program are also required to participate on one technical production crew and may choose to participate in a variety of work-study positions to gain extra hands-on experience. In 2018, the NCES reported that the university had 1,757 undergraduate students.

Anderson University

Anderson University in South Carolina offers a unique BA in Theatre with a concentration in dance that is specifically designed for students wishing to work in theatre and dance productions. Students in the program receive a foundational education in theatre and dance and are prepared for careers teaching, performing, directing or choreographing productions. Students interested in further developing their faith can participate in small groups, CRU, FCA, women's ministries, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Reformed University Fellowship or a variety of ministry opportunities through area churches and activities on campus. According to the NCES, the university had 2,881 undergraduate students in 2018.

Loyola Marymount University

Loyola Marymount University, located in California, had 6,700 undergraduate students in 2018, per the NCES. The university has a minor and BA in Dance. Students in the program participate in performances and are trained in various dance techniques and choreography. They also study dance theory and learn how to write and speak about dance. For their spiritual lives, students can attend spiritual retreats, weekly Protestant and multi-faith programs and faith-based international service immersion programs.
