Because there are a variety of teaching careers, teachers can work in a number of different environments. For example, teachers can work within primary schools, middle schools, and high schools. While each age range differs, teachers will commonly spend much of their time within public or private schools during common school hours. Outside of common school hours, teachers may also work during evenings and weekends to prepare lesson plans, but it is uncommon that teachers for primary, middle, and high school levels work during the summer.

In contrast, preschool teachers may work in a school setting, but many preschool teachers can work within childcare facilities or learning centers for children. Furthermore, teachers of a specific subject, such as art, may also teach outside of school settings; technical and trade schools may be an option for art teachers, but learning centers, museums, and galleries are also potential work environments.
