In order to be a correctional officer, you have to go through various types of training. This includes procedural training, firearms training, in-service training, basic fitness training, different types of classroom based training, and various specialized populations trainings. Procedural training includes learning basic procedures and behaviors such as:
- Restraint techniques
- Identifying/locating contraband
- Searches and strip search
- Cell search
- Riot control
- Booking/receiving
- Prisoner transport
- Ethics
- Emergency operations
- First aid and CPR
Firearms training teaches recruits how to safely use various types of weapons and in-service training consists of recruits being heavily supervised while working with minimum-security populations. Basic fitness training requires recruits to test in:
- Push-ups
- Sit-ups
- Squats
- Ladder climb
- Quarter mile run
- Grip strength
- Dynamic arm power
Classroom based training trains recruits in rehabilitative methods and legal training. The legal training requites recruits to become familiar with:
- Criminal law

The specialized populations training familiarizes recruits with the juvenile corrections population as well as the death row corrections inmates and procedures.
