Answer:

Few colleges and universities offer a degree in budget analysis. To become a budget analyst, many students pursue a degree in accounting or finance and take classes that emphasize budget preparation and analysis. Another option is to earn a degree in business administration or economics with a minor in accounting or finance that focuses on budgeting. Students who plan to work for the government or nonprofit organizations can become a budget analyst with a degree in public administration supplemented with a minor in accounting or finance.

Regardless of which degree they pursue, students who intend to work as a budget analyst must have strong analytical skills. They also must have excellent mathematical capabilities, be able to work with numbers to compile spreadsheets, and enter information into databases. In addition, they should be competent in the use of financial analysis software to analyze budgets.

To supplement their degree, aspiring budget analysts may find it beneficial to become certified. The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) offers the Certified Government Financial Management designation. This certification often is required for budget analysts in government and can be beneficial for those who work in business and corporations.
