Answer:

Idaho, Washington, Connecticut, and New Jersey are the only states that require medical assistants to have a certification. However, as this is a very competitive field, most medical assistants choose to get certified. Certification enables them to apply for better job opportunities and reach better positions in the medical field. Medical assistants have multiple certification options to further their careers. The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCTT), and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) are four of the most recognized certification agencies for medical assistants. All of them offer a different credential for medical assistants that want to get certified. For instance, the AAMA offers the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential, and the AMT offers the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification. They all have different requirements, and candidates have to know these requirements before applying for the credential. Keep in mind that it is very likely that you won't need a certification to work as a medical assistant, however, it will be very beneficial for your career.
