Answer:
A constable is an elected or appointed peace officer, most commonly having jurisdiction over a small community or town, who has many of the same duties and rights as a police officer or deputy sheriff. Constables were established sometime in the 12th century in England. In the United States, today, a constable is considered to be at the bottom of the law enforcement ladder of jobs.
Although their duties can vary depending upon their jurisdiction, most constables can serve summons, make arrests, detain suspected criminals, and provide security at events. They may also serve as a courtroom bailiff. Constables may carry a gun to carry out their duties.
As officers of the law, constables must have good problem-solving skills as well as good oral and written communication skills. According to Payscale.com, as of November 2020, the mean salary of a constable in the United States is $43,570 per year.
