What is the fire service entrance exam?

Answer:
All prospective firefighters will need to pass some kind of written exam, but the exact test will vary because it is formulated by specific departments within the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center. It can be expected that these exams will generally all follow the same format, or will at least test the same skills and competencies. Fire service entrance exams are designed to assess candidates' abilities to recall important information and think critically, as well as assess how quickly they are able to complete questions. Firefighter exams will generally be comprised of one hundred to one hundred-fifty questions, covering the following categories:
- Mathematical reasoning
- Mechanical reasoning
- Reading comprehension
- Spatial orientation
- Situational judgment
- Observation and memory
The test will also involve a personality assessment. The first part of the test, however, which tests the more academic and cognitive skills, needs to be successfully passed before a candidate can move on to the personality test component.
