Answer:

A rule 31 mediator is a mediator as registered by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Clinic (ADRC), according to section 14 of Rule 31: Alternative Dispute Resolution- Mediation. Rule 31 mediators must have complied with the continuing education requirement and application fees. Upon completion of these requirements, they must seek approval from ADRC to practice mediation in court. Training for rule 31 mediation is offered in some universities like Lipscomb University. There are three types of training program options to be a rule 31 mediator:

  1. Civil mediation training (40 hours)
  2. Family mediation training (46 hours)
  3. Domestic violence training

Civil mediation training and family mediation training is completed in 40 to 46 hours of training. On the other hand, domestic violence training's program completion is shorter: 12 hours of professional course. A rule 31 mediator can be both civil mediator and family mediator upon meeting these conditions:

  • completing any of the 40-hour or 46-hour training
  • completing a crossover training
  • completing a crossover training
