5S certification is an official recognition given to an organization upon evaluation that it meets the standards of implementing the 5S in Lean Six Sigma. The 5S's stand for Sort (Seiri), Set in order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke), and they are based on a Japanese philosophy and methodology for workplace organization and improvement. It is now one of the most common lean tools used in the problem-solving and improvement of organizations. 5S practices help in identifying and eliminating wastes and in improving cleanliness, orderliness, and safety of the workplace.

In the internal 5S audit part of the certification process, the practices and conditions of the workplace are evaluated and assessed based on 5S standards and criteria.
