There is no required degree to be an accounts payable clerk. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks typically enter their career with some college experience but no degree. However, this may vary by employer.

While you generally will not need a degree to be an accounts payable clerk, you will, however, need to demonstrate the skills required of the job. For example, you should be able to use a computer, present basic mathematics knowledge, and be able to use spreadsheets and other software required of your position. College courses in accounting can be particularly useful for this career. Generally, however, you will receive on-the-job training for several months to obtain the specific skills you will need to be an accounts payable clerk.

If you wish to pursue advancement without a degree, you may consider becoming a certified bookkeeper through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. This will require two years of experience, an exam, and abidance to a code of ethics.
