Similar to other professionals like doctors and lawyers, chiropractors have to prove their skill set and preparation before they can begin to practice. First, they earn a degree from a chiropractic college, after which they must pass their board exams. Most states require future chiropractors to pass all or part of the four-part test administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). The NBCE exam covers basic sciences (Part I), clinical sciences (Part II), clinical competency (Part III), and a practical skills exam (Part IV).If they pass that exam, they can then apply for a license to practice.

The remaining steps to licensure depend on the requirements of the state(s) in which they would like to practice. Typically required steps include a criminal background check, a state-level exam, and a list of personal references. All fifty states, as well as the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, issue licenses to qualified candidates. Chiropractors can only practice in the states that have granted them a license.
