Answer:

An EPA certification is given to technicians who qualify and are highly knowledgeable on the laws and rules concerning the handling of HVAC chemicals. HVAC chemicals are usually used in Air Conditioning Heating and Refrigerators. All technicians working with these types of appliances must then qualify for one of the four levels of EPA certification. An EPA certificate is useful for industries or people whose line of work concerns the production or automation of air-conditioning, heating, and refrigerating systems. The EPA is regulated by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) which requires all people who work with any system that contains HVAC chemicals to acquire an EPA 608 certification. Listed below are the four levels of EPA 608 Certification:

  • Type 1 certification covers servicing small appliances such as household refrigerators, window air conditioners, and water coolers.
  • Type 2 certification covers servicing or disposing of equipment that uses a high-pressure refrigerant that is included in residential air conditioners, heat pumps, and supermarket refrigeration.
  • Type 3 certification covers servicing or disposing of equipment that uses low-pressure refrigerants like chillers.
  • Universal or Type 4 certification covers servicing or disposing of all equipment covered in types 1,2, and 3.
