What are the units of an SAT score?

Answer:

The units of an SAT score are points: numbers measured on a scale from 400 to 1600, with 400 being the lowest and 1600 being the highest. These scores themselves are totals made up of two separate section scores: a math score, and an evidence-based reading and writing score. These section scores are each measured on scales from 200 to 800. Section scores themselves are not numbers between 200 and 800 by default; they are converted from a test-taker's raw section scores. Raw section scores are numbers equal to the amount of questions a student answers correctly in each SAT section. The SAT Suite of Assessments uses a complex conversion method to derive scaled scores from raw scores.

For each SAT test-taker, the Suite of Assessments will count their number of correct answers in each section to find the test-taker's raw section scores. Next, the Suite converts both section scores into scaled scores: the numbers between 200 and 800. Last, the Suite adds the two scaled scores together to form the SAT total score: the number between 400 and 1600. Students can view their SAT total, math, and ERW scores on their online SAT score report.
